Barbara & David, Balboa Peninsula, CA
The plant palette selected to update this exquisite peninsula point home is formal yet understated, bold and colorful, and easy care. At the front entrance gate, a swath of purple salvia is bordered by a hedge of fragrant natal plum and magenta bougainvillea enlivens the adjacent white walls. On one side of the central colonnade, striped grasses add a splash of color beneath a mature hedge. On the other side, a privacy screen of Carolina Cherry also serves as a backdrop for more purple and dark pink plants. On the waterfront, low growing magenta bougainvillea, purple daylilies and other colorful tropicals contrast artfully against the cerulean water.
